The BJ40 Plus is the serious one. Body-on-frame, part-time four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential, hill descent control and four recovery hooks — built to be taken off the road rather than styled to look like it could be. The roof panels come off, and it comes in right-hand drive.

Body on frame, and it matters
The BJ40 Plus is built on a separate ladder frame rather than a car floorpan. That is the difference between a vehicle styled to look capable and one engineered to be, and you feel it the first time you take it somewhere with no road.
A locking rear diff and four recovery hooks
Part-time four-wheel drive, hill descent control, a locking rear differential and four recovery points — two front, two rear. The hooks are the tell: they are only fitted to vehicles the maker expects to get stuck.
The roof comes off
The roof panels are removable. Inside there is leather, climate control and heated seats, a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 10-inch centre screen, so nothing about the interior punishes you for the capability underneath.
